two threads in one. butcher a banjo & dealing with rust

butcher a banjo

I started this thread a long time ago just to see how people felt.  It ties into the post from picnman.  If this link doesn't take you to the thread, search: butcher a banjo in this website.

Edited:  the link doesn't work.  Go to the upper right corner of your page and type in butcher a banjo and it will come up.

Also as to the rust.  I just had my 25 in Monte Hendricks shop for a new 5 string neck.  He did a fantastic job too.  But while it was there, we were talking about my living right on the beach and how fast things rust.  I asked him about the springs and ball bearings rusting and if anything could be done.

He did some research and came up with this product made my Boeing for their aircraft.

1st product:  Rust Free, rust and stain remover.  www.boeshield.com

It is a rust and stain removier just like the bottle says.  Monte said wit worked great on the springs, bearings and washers.  (Everything else was plated and no problem.)  Word of caution!  It says STAIN REMOVER!  So keep it away from the wood parts of your banjo.

After cleaning the parts free of rust, and washing the solvent off, drying completely, part 2.

Part 2:  Boeshield T-9.  Waterproof luberication, rust and corrosion protection.

And this product does just what it says.  You spray it on, or how ever you apply it (depending on how you buy it) , let it dry and wipe off the excess.

They came in a 4oz and 8oz container.  It comes in barrels too, but I doubt you'd use that much in 5 life times.

Totally fantastic stuff.

Gary
