Just got a ball bearing ring set

From Dave1climber on 11/6/2011 9:39:00 PM

Can any one tell me the dimensions of a rim? Hole size, depth, etc.

Any help would be wonderful.

Thanks

Do you have a 25 or 26 Ring? I will be changing the head on my 25 shortly and can get the dimensions then if no one else speaks up. Contact me in a couple weeks if you don't here from me.

there was a thread a couple months back of someone who got all that info and built a BB pot. I'll look for it.

Here's one link where that info is given... I think there is another too done not to long ago.

Many thanks to Gary for the link. It seems to have all the info I need.

So I am puzzled, when i bought my ring set it was listed as a 26, however it has the scallops on the ring and no holes in the hoop. Could this be a late 25 or a early 26? The ring has sixty holes.
Also when doing online research I found this link:
siminoff.net/pages/gibson_rim_...tion.html
If you look at figure 5 you will notice between the outer ring and the rim a spacer of some sort. Does anyone know what that is?
Does anyone's banjo have such a spacer?
Thanks Dave

In figure 5, if you mean the part marked C, that is the scalloped portion of the ring.

If you mean the grey L shaped area about midway down the ring that the trim ring is setting on, then yes, my banjo has a brass hoop there about 3/32" square.

It is either dirty or stained to match the rim as it is almost invisible unless you take the banjo apart.

Read my post here: banjohangout.org/topic/210788
which gives a better description of this part.

Thanks Rick for the rapid reply with the most important part of my question.
Still leaves me wondering if it's a 25 or 26 ring, I will use it regardless.

If you have the scalloped ring and the non-shotgun skirt you probably have parts mixed from different years or something produced in the middle of changing over. I would just use what you have and enjoy.

hmmm. I posted eariler, but it's not here.... now I'l probalaly get a double post....

My 25 BB is original pot and hardware. But it came with the scalloped ring and the skirt has no holes! Gibson doesn't seem to have a hard cast set pattern of doing things.

Rick, thanks for the reply, I will use what I have and enjoy.

Gary
Sounds like I have a 25 ring set.
Thanks for the reply
Dave
