Two-Finger Picking--Learning

From BlowingRockNC on 2/13/2014 10:42:39 AM

I found the above description of the basic (beginner?) two-finger picking style. First, is this a reasonably accurate statement of the basic style? Second, if it is, when using it for a specific song, do you just throw in the melody notes with your thumb or second finger, while continuing as much as possible the basic style set forth in the web site? I don't know much about this, but I'm working on it. Thanks.

I am just a beginner myself, but I have found Sean's page very useful. And as far as I know that is accurate description of the two finger thumb lead style. It is more or less the same description that Art Rosenbaum has on his Old time mountain banjo book.

Sean's arrangements are good for a beginner. They are basic. I don't feel experienced enough to answer your second question. :)

Thanks. Good luck to both of us. I can play reasonably well at my modified version of 3-finger, which isn't a Scruggs' type of picking, but it also isn't an real OT type either, so it's not much use to me here.

Love that site! I started frailing but like thumb lead better now.
