YAY some members! How would you all like to do this? Suggestions... ideas...
For now i am getting to know the tunes better. i am already familiar with a few of them but have never heard some of them... what a great selection! BHO member Gadaya compiled all the tunes on his blog "Cornbread, Molasses & Sassafras" in one easily downloadable zip file (much thanks for that work and awesome Blog BTW!). it can be found here:

i have made a playlist of the tunes on my iphone and have been listening to these great old recordings over and over and over... i am burning them into my brain as i work, eat and sleep waiting for my DVD to arrive.

Yeah, that was great of Gadaya to put those tracks together. If I could have figured out the legal aspects of it I would have had them on the DVD.

I would like to post video of my progress, but I need some advice. I have a youtube account, but I have not been able to upload videos. It keeps telling me I have the wrong format or something. I have a logitech webcam. The sound quality is pretty poor, but I guess it gets the point across. I would just really like to know what I need to do to get vids uploaded. Any thoughts?

Hunter, the dvd is amazing! Thank you for joining in here.
This is great timing, my obsession started about 10 months ago, so I'm looking forward to learning a lot here. I'm listening too this week and only suggest the first song be on the easier end of the spectrum and that we just get started and figure it out as we go.

Hi John,
youtube will only let you upload certain types of video files. when you create a video with your camera you need to make sure that it is creating a video file that is supported by youtube. You can tell what kind of video file your camera creates by looking at the file extension. A file extension is the lettres after the dot or period (.) in the file name. ( ie: banjosong.MPEG or banjosong.MP4 ) The most common file extensions for video files are .MPEG or .AVi or .MPEG4 or .M4V or .WMV or .MOV or .MP4
You should be able to select the type or file that your camera creates. here is a list of video files that are supported by Youtube:

Well good, Jeff covered the video files much better than I would have! I'll just add that sometimes, depending on your computers settings, the extension is hidden. You might have to right click and get more information about it there.
I don't seem to get updates when a reply is added to this, though I've left the box checked. Do others?

John, I think your Lonesome John is sounding great! You've got some nice personal touches. I'd say at this point, if you haven't already, stop using the lesson on that tune and don't even listen to Salyer's recording for a while. Take the tune off in a corner and work it up in a direction you like, not particularly trying to make it sound like any other version but like what you think Lonesome John should sound like. Maybe after a few weeks of that you might want to go back and listen to Salyer's and other's versions and see if there's anything from them you'd like to incorporate.

Thanks, Hunter. It's funny, I was kinda starting to have that thought myself. I really wanted, as much as possible, to play it like you. You've got some really great techniques that I want to incorporate into my own playing. Some of it still feels unnatural to me, but that's ok, everything does at first. I think I'm close enough now to start making it mine. And I'm sure, then it will come alive for me. Thanks so much for watching and getting back to me.

Thanks, Hunter. And I do love my banjo! I wish I had a better recording mic to go with the camera. The banjo's got such a nice tone. But a lot of that is lost in the recording. Maybe someday.

hey John, good work on your Lonesome John! i like your style! it sounds like you recorded it with some reverb or something, it sounds cool! What kind of banjo is that? i working out Lonesome John as my first tune from the DVD. i should be ready to post something in a couple of days. i have been at it every spare minute this weekend but there is never enough time... i really don't want to do anything else... Superfuntimes!
