After reading the rave reviews of the Unfortunate Puppy DVD I downloaded a copy from Mel Bay on Demand and was soon working on Lonesome John. At first I found it a bit frustrating since there were parts of the tune which seemed impossible to decipher even at 50% speed. But here's the thing I discovered. Hunter's approach really makes you listen, again and again and very carefully. I had no tab to fall back on so I had no choice. I'd listen to the instruction, then again at full speed, then at 50% and then at medium speed. Upon repeated listenings I picked up different things at the different speeds which probably would have escaped my notice if I could have just picked up the tab. Never have I listened to a tune more carefully or repeatedly on an instructional DVD than on this one.

Another benefit of this approach is that it encourages improvisation. There may be parts of the tune which you just can't quite catch even after repeated efforts. But you can get close enough to come up with your own variation.

I know there are a few tabs available to those with a DVD code. I'm not quite sure how I get them from the downloaded version. Come to think of it I'm not sure that I want to. I think I benefit more from Hunter's approach if I don't have the tab to fall back on.

Overall just a great DVD with a lot of really interesting tunes to learn. Thanks Hunter!

Did the PDF booklet not come with the download? I had understood from Mel Bay that it would and it's important that it does – as it gives me a place to gab about the more theoretical stuff. It also has some real information like sources for the tunes and where to find them, keys and tunings and other background information. And, it has the password and username for accessing the tabs. In case you missed it elsewhere, this is also a great resource, as Gadaya has put together the 10 original fiddle tunes that the arrangements are based on (towards the bottom): longplayingrecords.wordpress.c...obertson/ Hunter
	neillconnor says: 9/26/2011 6:36:31 AM I even e mailed hunter about lonesome John as I couldn't figure the weird slide and pull off in the 2nd part and he did mean video of what he was doing real slow.....still couldn't get it, then a couple of days later I accidentally stumbled upon it. Bit of a Zen moment!!

Perhaps I'm missing something or perhaps the download is. It might be worth checking into. By the way Neill I know what you mean by your "Zen Moment". I had one of those myself...they seem to come after a number of repeat listens don't they?

	Hunter Robertson says: 9/30/2011 7:19:19 AM Just to follow this up for people who've bought the DVD as a download, the booklet does come with it, but it's a little tricky to find. Using Quicktime, there should be a PDF button. If you're using the new BrainPlayer, the PDF will download into “my documents” or “documents” folder. They're working on improving the way PDFs come with the downloads. I assume all this holds for the BHO's download set-up as well ( banjohangout.org/lessons/catalog/ ) Hunter
