Just wanted to check in and see how you all are getting on with the DVD. Put up your videos or sound recordings!
I'd also be interested in knowing what points you particularly like in the DVD, or are having trouble with. I've got a few ideas for a second one and with your input I'm sure I can improve the presentation.
Another thing is, what techniques/styles etc. would you be interested in seeing covered in a future DVD?

I'm a newbie, but I'm greatly enjoying using the DVD. I've only had a go at Lonesome John so far; in the interests of science, I've linked a recording of my efforts to the group. (The rhythm of some of the phrasing - particularly a passage in the second half of the tune - is awry; shall try to get on top of that...)

I think that sounds pretty good for 3 months playing, even with having played guitar before. As I mentioned in the notes, that was the first tune my father taught me - took me a while to get down!
Keep working on it!

That's very heartening indeed: cheers! It's a great tune. I think I'll give it a while before trying to tackle any of the other tunes of the DVD; there's plenty in that one for the time being.

Yeah, it really is a great tune.
I often play a tune more or less exclusively while I'm learning it. That can go on for weeks - ask my wife, she'll tell you.

Hi Hunter, thanks for checking in, maybe it will light a fire under my butt to return to the DVD. I must admit I have pretty much given up on trying to learn from the DVD. Not because I don't like it, i very much do! The reason is that I found that I was spending way too much time trying to figure out what your doing for some parts of each phrase. I watch, slow it down and repete the segment over and over but I get frustrated and move on to playing something I know or bust out a tab for a tune. I find tabs very useful.I don't play tunes by Tab, I memorize phrases one at a time once I know what the moves are. I just find it hard to decipher what you're doing on the video and to be frank your explanations are a a little bit thin. U hope you can take rhat as construcrive critisism, I know the DVD is for intermediate players, I am just not there yet with my ear and get impatient. I know I will most defenatly return to it, maybe soon. I can see how it will be a great resource once I am a little more experienced at hearing the moves. Cheers!

Hey Fesso, rejoice for tabs are underway! Spring work and taxes have slowed me down some, but with Old Woodchuck's help (I'm not much good at writing tab) we should get some out soon.
Yours, Hunter

Hey Hunter, that is great news! I have the same issue as Fesso. I totally dig your style and want to incorporate a lot of your moves into my playing. I just need some tabs as a road map. Don't want to use them as a crutch to play from, just need them to get a clue. If you get just one done and want to post it I'll give it a whirl. Thanks and looking forward to getting back to it!

Hey Hunter,
I just got your dvd on Friday, and I'm having a great time working with it. I'm originally a guitar player, and I've been playing banjo for six months now. Up till now I've had a hard time working out how to go beyond 'bum-diddy' and using my thumb on the other strings. After a solid weekend with the dvd I'm already playing bare-bones versions of both Lonesome John and Candy girl, and drop-thumb is finally making sense to me.
My technique is super-sloppy, I'm missing notes all over, and I'm nowhere near full speed, but none of it matters because I'm playing real clawhammer banjo and it feels awesome.
Thank you!
Sam

Michael, sorry not to reply to your post earlier, it's been a crazy summer, partly without internet. Anyway, I'm plugged back in now and we're continuing to work on the tabs!
Sam, that's great! I'm really glad to have helped and that you're having a ball.
Hunter
