Well, i have had the DVD for a week now and have exclusively been working Lonesome John. i am struggling with keeping up with the instruction and figuring out exactly what notes and tech are to be played. it is definitely helping me develop my ear which is good but it is taking me a long time to figure the phrases out as i don't really have a good "ear" and tones are hard for me... How are those tabs coming along Tony?
Don't get me wrong, i am really enjoying the process and the tune and giving my "ear" a good workout!
i think having the tabs would help a lot so i could spend less time trying to figure out what is going on and spend more time actually playing.
i am aware of the "dangers" of tabs and i don't usually play tunes from tabs but rather use them to accurately know what to practice and repete. i think they would help as a secondary supplement to the DVD which i still think is awesome BTW.
i will be posting my Lonesome John even though it's really rough... this is a process group after all.

Glad to hear you like the DVD!
If you're finding it a bit of a struggle, it may be that you should cut back and work on the basics a little more, or simpler tunes, and then come back to Lonesome John. But, look at it this way. I've been playing the tune in some form for about 20 years, however, when I was arranging it for the DVD (bringing it more in line with Salyer's recording) I easily put 10-20 hours of work just into that version and getting it down smoothly. You've been working on the tune a week I don't find that inordinate.
Use tab as you feel the need (there's a link in the notes to Lyle Konigsberg's tab of the tune. Tony might have one in his materials too), I don't think there's any danger involved except that maybe you won't work your ear as much as you could and a good ear is the result of practice. It can feel like a slog at times figuring out what's going on but I can promise that it's not wasted.
From your video, I think your playing of it is coming along nicely, keep it up! There are some parts which vary from what I'm playing, and they sound good.

Hey fesso, nice job! I really don't think you need the tab. Not at all. You're where I feel like I was after a week. I noticed in a couple of lines you stumble in a way that throws the timing off a bit, but you're real close. You'll get it. Just keep at it. Your ear is working just fine.
There's a part of me that wishes I hadn't even used Hunter's lesson as much as I did when I was first learning the tune. I find, for myself, that a tab or a lesson can really limit my ear and creativity. It can be hard to break away from it and hear anything else.
So, I'd say stick with your ear, it's just fine.

Can anyone tab the 2nd part of lonesome John, or more specifically, the part were hunter says he switches fingers. I see he does 2 slides on the 1st string (2-3) but I can't figure the rest

Hi Neill,
I don't have a tab of that yet, it's a funny little move, here's what happens: you slide up to that 4th-ish fret (5th sounds better on a fretted banjo I think), then at the same time as you pull that off to the 3rd fret you hit the thumb string. Then the thumb comes in and hits the 2nd string (open). Finally the index hits the first string at the 3rd fret. Hope that makes sense!
