Anyone at Grass Valley Bluegrass festival hear Kenny Ingram playing his Burlile Banjo with The Larry Stephenson Band? Sounded solid!

I did hear it & had Kenny sign my resonator for when my banjo comes back from Chris Cioffi's shop (probably Wednesday or Thursday). I had a look at the Burlile banjo @ the "record" table after the afternoon set. Same neck as the KI's as to inlay pattern but Jim insists that all the parts are American: he built the neck, reso & rim and, of course, the tone ring; not sure what hardware he's using. Kenny said that he's also using the old-style nitrocellulose finish which he says eliminates the need for speed necks because this finish doesn't "shed" that sticky stuff, even in the humidity of the south. I didn't get to play it but I did play Dick Brown's prototype @ IBMA a couple years back but it wasn't a "complete" proto, just some parts being tested.

Kenny played Sonny's Vega in the evening set & I was amazed at the sound he got out of that banjo. I've never really heard a Vega that I thought sounded good for bluegrass (and I'm sure most of it is Kenny's right hand) but this banjo sounded real good. And the band was good & tight. Larry's got a great voice. Good show all around! :-)

Burlile tone ring
