Things are happenin'

From Pickin furry paws on 9/10/2012 8:41:24 PM

Well...ten months in, and things are getting interesting. Curious, how much do y'all's banjos rattle? Because the ring is really starting to shake my rim, especially after being picked for about 20 minutes. I'm also feeling a great deal of vibrations through the center and lower corner of the reso...does any of y'all's banjos do that?

Vibrations yes. A rattle, as in noise absolutely not.

My KI has an odd sound on the second & third but I attribute that to it's dire need for refretting. I am probably going to Nashville soon to have Chris Cioffi refret & do a setup on it. Reading the reviews on the BHO, I'm sure he will fix it! :-)

Furry Paws, is your head fairly tight? It seem with the head tight, the ring shouldn't have room to rattle around...

I haven't noticed any rattle with my Tenn20 banjo, but after having recently made the final head adjustment, the instrument needs about 20 minutes of hard picking to attain anywhere near complete volume and full range response. At this point in it's adjustment process, the sequence pretty much has to start over again if I put the banjo down for 5 minutes. This phenomenon is par for the course when using my mode of adjustment, and the instrument will eventually settle in in a favorable way.

The connection I am making with your post is the fact of the 20 minute buildup. It would seem that more power and volume means more of just about everything, including the potential for some form of vibration. I assume that you are referring to a negative aspect of vibration, rather than just to a tactile response to the power produced by a great ring, which would be felt as well.

It appears unlikely that the ring is actually vibrating on the rim. While all possibilities should be considered, I have never heard of this happening. Other connections to check would be flange, tailpiece rods, neck, etc. ... anything which added power might move. A Ferrari will probably generate more quirks than a Toyota Camry. Good luck - You'll probably have the answer before these responses receive much coverage.

My 5-year old Williams/ Burlile sounds real lively too. I know what you mean.

Just pick it a lot ... it will get better I promise ;<).

Haha, thanks J. @Mike, by rattle, I mean it vibrates the shell of the banjo. The tone-ring is certainly not loose - that would be catastrophic.
