Heavy weight champion

From Pickin furry paws on 10/15/2011 9:37:29 PM

Yep, my ring is one of the heaviest Jim has ever cut. 54.10 ounces. Gonna be real interesting to hear how it sounds! Will upload video clips when the banjo returns home to daddy.

Was it cut that heavy deliberately? I remember reading that Jim increased the weight on rings that he turned for OFF rims. Did you ask for (or did he recommend) a heavy ring for your banjo? Just curious...congrats on the new ring....let us know your thoughts.

Haha, HO goof, I guess, John!

Jim and I talked many times about rim weight vs. tone ring weight. Early on, he explained that he cut the rings intended for the FF-rims a little heavier. If my memory serves me right, he mentioned 3#4oz. - 3#5oz. Somewhere in that range. And that weight he said worked with rims 18 - 19 oz. in weight. My rim, however, is 17.70oz. - a little lighter. Technically, I didn't need a ring as heavy as I do. However, I requested that Jim cut it a little heavier than he would normally intend. Before the ring was drilled, it came in at 54.8oz. So, more weight on a lighter rim.

All this to say, my motive for the heavier-ring-on-the-lighter-rim was to replicate the Porter Church Granada. Jim told me that the PC has a rim weight of 14.4 oz. + a ring that is around 52oz. I wanted to replicate that tone as best as I could.
