Over the past year, I have done some extensive, long-term tests on which head tensions work well with the stated rim. The OFF rim--a heavy and short-dimension piece--tends to accentuate the high frequencies naturally. I've found that head tensions cannot venture past G# without beginning to diminish the wonderful sustain and metallic growl the Burlile tone-ring is supposed to produce. I've noticed that the best bridge with the Burlile ring is the Sullivan baked maple, between 2.1 and 2.4 g respectively. With this bridge and a head tension exactly at G#, the banjo produces a very surprising tone, comparable with some good conversion banjos.
Happy Picking
