Good words about Al and my pickin' from a pro picker

randy, ain't it funny how the six degrees of separation factor, just all of a sudden jumps up and bites you in the butt? my reason for writing you was prompted by watching your learning of sonny's nine pound hammer, and I could really tell, your developing  the good Scruggs dominant prominent forward roll in that tune, and not the so often used forward backward roll, than in my opinion is a mistake, and not Scruggs! I played the forward, backward roll, and mistakenly took it for what earl was doing until I met Vernon McIntyre in 1995, and I had a successful road career with several bands, but I never had a teacher, just trial and error, then on a trip with Vernon back in 1999 or 2000, I went with him on a week long road trip though Georgia an Florida, and we stayed at fiddling al's house, Vernon used to play with him I think at one of the theme parks down there, and yes what a great fiddler and overall guy, him and his son came up here to Ohio a few yrs back to a festival that Vernon put on, and I gave his son a bridge for his Williams banjo, and a few pointers. as I was reading your home page, you blog about living in southeast mo caught my attention, I know the area well that you had your accident in, I grew up in northeast Arkansas(Jonesboro, born in Paragould) and when I moved back to the Ozarks from Kansas in 1995 to work mainly as a bluegrass banjo picker, I settled in Thayer mo and my family band and other bands I would work with were from poplar bluff and dophinian mo and other small towns north and east of west plains, Ozark, other small Ozark communities, man I have run those old back roads , pig trails, and goat, paths drove on roads so curvy that you would wear out your horn, honking at your own back bumper! In short, randy, I just wanted to let you know, that al is teaching you good, and keep that timing that your using in the nine pound hammer as a foundation for you banjo playing and you wont go wrong, it not only the timing that sonny uses, but it is Scruggs timing! take care, sincerely, Kevin d Hendrix, warpdrive!
