For me, it's more variations in fills and backup licks.

At my lesson last Monday I tore into Sonny's version of Little Cabin Home on the Hill. Al's eyes lit up and he jumped up and grabbed the guitar and said, "That's the best you've ever played that. Now, let's talk about it." It was a good lesson. I've been working on the Bobby and Sonny songs, Little Cabin Home on the Hill and Nine Pound Hammer.

And the funny thing about it is I was dreading going to my lesson. I had kind of ran into a road block and was having some trouble and I was down. It happens to me regularly though, I have some kind of break through when I think I'm up against the wall and Al says, "Let's take a look and see what's happening." Then he slows me down and dissects the problem and it's usually me using a wrong finger or a wrong timing and he straightens it out. He's a good teacher, really.

Learn those fills and transitions. Know them by number. Al will say, "Just play number seven." You should be able to rip off number seven. "Now play number 4 fill, etc. I have learned that you need to learn those fills and variations, ie, the fill for four beats of G, or six beats of G, etc. Four beats of D, six beats.

Remembering those fills by number is kicking my butt. Maybe I will dedicate a week or two to that purpose. Obviously he wont stop using them on me so i guess I will reluctantly submit.
I was on vacation in NC and Gatlinburg for the last week working on playing under the influence of moonshine. A couple more jars and I think I will have it down.

Al does that to me all the time. He says, "Play number three. You better play number three." I say, "What is number three?" Then he takes my binder and starts thumbing through it until finds the page with the back up and fills and points out number three. I said, "Well I guess I'd better not just memorize the licks, but what number they are too." LOL. I have it good though, I get to sit across from Al and face him in person. Oh no, you don't get away with anything. Even on skype.

I tried to fake it by keeping them on my music stand off camera where he cant see them lol. But there are 3 or 4 pages and I cant have them all available at the same time. I guess I need a couple more music stands lol.

This week, and since late May until September I think, I´m off from Al. I live on a tourist area and work like crazy now. The last thing Al gave me was some kind of waltz back up I asked for. Since then I have learn by myself from Earls book "All the good times are past and gone" and will ask Al to complete it with some backup when we start having lessons again. This is my way of living as we only see the sun and feel the warm climate for a few month in a year.

I attended a monthly jam in Baltimore recently. When I told Al, he asked if I led any songs so I played Jesse James as I had done at the jam. In order to save my future embarrassment and his reputation he immediately began showing me how to play backup by doing rolls around the melody and adding fill licks. We worked on Jesse last week and now we are doing Worried Man Blues. This had been great for me because I am beginning to see how this all goes together.

I'm LMAO right now. I've heard and done almost all of what has been said in the post. I too need to memorize the fills and licks, as I've been caught scrambling to find the pages. Then you're nothing but a dope anyway trying read 'em and play 'em all smoothly. Nope...ain't gonna happen. Right now I'm trying to get the back up and fills and transitions to build some intelligent back-up. Intelligent is the trick however. still having fun though.

Hello all... I just had my first lesson with Al a couple of days ago. I'm working on rolls, the first five backup & Fills, and Fireball Mail. That's the easy part... grin... harder is unlearning some of the bad technique I've managed to incorporate into my playing. I've been reading all the posts here and it sounds like I picked the right teacher.
