Just checking in on my US Road Trip. We flew into Lexington, KY last week, spent a few days there, but found no bluegrass music.

This past Saturday, we drove to Gatlinburg, TN in The Great Smoky Mountains, and found bluegrass and old time everywhere. It's on the street corners at night, in some of the tourist attractions during the day, and last night we stopped at The Earnest Tubb Record Store in Pigeon Forge for a fantastic bluegrass concert in the parking lot.

We rented a cabin in Gatlinburg, and as I was able to bring my Tranjo on the trip, I have done some picking myself on the porch, surrounded by the beauty of The Great Smoky Mountains.

yesterday, we drove the loop in historic Cade's Cove, and when we stopped at one of the old abandoned log houses, I grabbed the Tranjo from the car and sat on the porch to pick. I was halfway through BRCH when a car pulled up and an older couple got out and walked up the path, giving me a round of appreciative applause, my first "public" performance on the five-string!

Today we depart this magical place and drive to the next part of our family vacation: Washington DC.

	Kirk Jacobs says: 7/9/2013 4:08:07 AM Rented a cabin a couple of years back outside of Pigeon Forge. The scenery sitting on that porch was inspiring. I didn't play banjo at the time but your update makes me want to go back to just sit and play for those mountains. Now that you are a public performer in Gatlinburg you can write "professional banjo player" on your resume. Glad to read you are having a good time.
	loukiii says: 7/9/2013 5:31:20 AM Sweet! We are heading up to Gatlinburg this weekend. I take my banjo with me everywhere I go. I took it there last year and would pick every night in the campground by our campfire. People passing by would sometimes stop and listen for a while, most of the time they would look at me like I had 2 heads because they probably didn't know what to think. One night another camper from Louisiana came over with his guitar and we picked a couple songs together and his daughters sang. It was really cool. This will be our third year camping there, same campground every year. Supposedly at one of the campgrounds nearby they have a monthly bluegrass jam. Not sure if it will fall on the weekend we are there but I am going to find out for sure.

	MoPac fan says: 7/9/2013 7:10:17 PM How does that tranjo sound? I hauled my banjo all over Arkansas because I wanted to take it with me. I wouldn't leave it in the motel room so I took it with me in the car and locked it in the trunk. The good thing about that was that I always had it with me for any jam opportunity.
	MiG-19 says: 7/11/2013 6:31:36 AM The Tranjo is no Stelling or Gibson, but its not meant to be. It is a reasonable sounding banjo, perfect for outdoor camp fires and hotel rooms, and it goes into overhead storage bins, even on regional jets. The action on mine is great, and the craftsmanship is nice too.
