Well, I've been pretty silent up until now, I've been taking lessons off Al for about 2 or 3 months now. I did have prior experience and some playing ability so I've moved along pretty quick. Al has really opened my eyes by sprinkling in bits of music theory and fun facts. I'm pretty happy with my progress. BUT, yesterday I had a lesson and it was a short turn around...about 4 days or so....and I didn't get much practice time. I struggled with EVERYTHING...G boogie lick we are working on....chord changes...CHORD CHANGES....fell flat on my face with ground speed revisit...just not good. It takes some pain to gain, so I'm motivated to get out and practice! Frustration leads to success right?

Man that never ever happens to me. I am always 100% spot on perfect. Have been since the day I picked up the banjo for the first time. The only reason I even take lessons is to stimulate the economy with my $40 a week...I would take more but I don't want to over stimulate... Now back to reality. It happens to everybody at one time or another. Lots of stuff to learn and if it was easy everybody would be playing the banjo. Just take it one day at a time and dont stress out about it, it is suppose to be fun. I have been with Al about a year and he has not sent a single report card to my parents...

That happens to me pretty often, especially in the weeks I don't get as much practice time as I would like. I started out taking a 1/2 lesson every week from Al, but I was also driving to his house instead of taking them online and that's about a 30 mile drive, so I decided to take a 1 hour class every two weeks to save on gas and to give myself more practice time in between.
The problem I was having taking a 30 minute lesson every week and trying to work and make a living was that I didn't have enough time to assimilate the material and learn it and I was moving fast but not really learning the material and it's important stuff. Now I usually have a 1 hour lesson with Al about every 2 or 3 weeks. I love it.
Lou, are you taking the equivalent of 2 lessons per week? That's a lot of material to cover. How's that working out?

I take a 1 hour lesson weakly. (weekly too) I like it. He loads me down with stuff and then we see what takes. We review and what I didnt get, I work on some more, and he adds a little more to it to keep me on my toes. I need an hour because I have to catch Al up on the continuing saga of my banjo adventures and I need time for show and tell, and Al's Bluegrass Story Time.

I've had these days all the time. Even though he has quit the BHO hopefully he doesn't quit playing.

Yeah bad-days come and go. I take a 1 hour lesson every Saturday 11-12,(if life does not get in the way) and have made good progress in my opinion, working on ground speed and sally goodin right now, What I do find is practicing in the morning is better than the afternoon for me, I have to be at work at 7:30 so I am up at 5 and around 5:45 I will be hitting the strings. I still don’t have the right hand speed I think I should have but it will come one day.

Like you Mopik I'm an every other week lesson taker and it still seems I'm cramming right before my lesson. Matter of fact Al and I are just finishing up on skype when Lewis shows up for his sat. a.m. lesson. But the clumsy days come and go. I think it important to place as much emphasis on the good days and break through days as one does on the days that the fingers are fat and don't work. All part of the learning process...(in my humble opinion)

I practice early in the morning too. I start a pot of coffee and while my wife is in the shower I practice. Good thing for me she takes a long shower. If I practice in the evening it's usually after Deb goes to bed so I try to be quiet. Have you ever tried to be quiet with a banjo? LOLOLOL!! So in the morning while Deb is taking her shower I can pick full volume and I usually have 45 minutes or so.
On bad days. I think of the Flatt and Scruggs song about how the good times outweigh the bad. When you start getting the atta-boys from Al and the lessons go really well and you start having more of them than the bad it gets good.
