This mornings lesson started with me showing Al my progress from last week's lesson, which was on "You Don't Know My Mind", with the interesting JD Crowe hammer-ons. My assignment for next week is a new song, Jim Mill's version of "How Mountain Girls Can Love". What's everyone else working on?

I love that. I emailed Katy Daley on Bluegrasscoutry.org and requested it and she played it for me. I was working on that on last Monday over at Al's capoed up in C the way Jim plays it on the recording. That and Think Of What You've Done also in C.

Well, last Wednesday I had to correct Al on a few small mistakes in timing and sloppy pull-off's, but beyond that ...
(ha ha ) ...
I'm still trying to get nice & clean on Cripple Creek, Cumberland Gap, Sally Ann, and some basic rolls and licks, but that will probably always be the case.
I am trying to get Sally Goodin down ... mostly there now. The new assignment is Lonesome Road Blues. I am, I guess, at the 'fundamentals' stage.

G that's a good place to be with Al. Lonesome Road Blues. Just last week I was working on back up for Think Of What You've Done, and Al said, "Play Lonesome Road Blues." I had to rethink and now I have to go back and reinforce those licks. I guess what I'm saying is learn it well, you'll see those ideas again.

Last week was Little Cabin Home on the Hill as kicked off by Sonny Osborne. A couple weeks ago I asked about Foggy Mt Special. I think Al has a mild sadistic streak because this week he gave it to me...
As always... I can't wait to see what he has in store for me next time.

2 Dollar Bill in C, plus back up(which still needs work), going over already learned songs that I obviously didn't actually LEARN the first time. Going down the list of ones I am suppose to know and ones I know* don't match by half.
(*Disclaimer: "know" is a relative term meaning I can usually muddle through well enough the listener has an idea of what the song is.)

Great stuff guys! Randy is absolutely right, Al will call out a lick from one of his early lessons and say "Play it just like you did in Possum Up a Gum Stump" (or something like that). A lot of this really is plug and play. Loukii, the backup and fills are always in front of me! G, I still can't play Sally Goodin, and it's one of my favorites, and I was just noodlin on Lonesome Road Blues this weekend. Eric, your videos are one of the reasons I started this group, so if you are learning Ground Speed, I hope to see a video soon! Kirk, learning songs in the key of C means you are advanced with Al!

I've got Two Dollar Bill in C and Bury Me Beneath The Willow. Lou was asking me if Al was going to teach us to play in other keys. The answer is....yes. It's in the progression of the lessons. We're talking about playing in C with the banjo still tuned to G (No drop C tuning or whatever). That's cool too because it leaves the up the neck back-up available.

I am working on Jed Clampet but this week Al had me play the dozen tunes he has given me since I began taking lessons from him about 8 months ago. It was a humbling experience and Al was his usual patient and positive self. Great for me since I have the rhythm of a dead man. But some of at least the phrases and licks are beginning to sound like banjo music; a tribute to his perseverance. He says the epiphany will come; I only hope I live long enough.

Today we critiqued and made corrections on Foggy Mountain Special. Spent a lot of time working on some backup patterns incorporating some of the licks I have been working on for the last month or so. And I was tasked with "I'm Going Back To the Old Home"

Last week I got another piece of going back to the old home. Kind of an abstract break by JD that although follows the chord progression, had absolutely nothing, well hardly anything to do with the melody that I could see lol. Did Bluegrass Musicians take hallucinogenics too?
