Deering smile bridge

From todd6226 on 7/8/2016 7:32:53 PM

Has anyone tried Deerings new smile bridge?  Tony Triscka seemed very enthusiatist about this bridge.  Any thoughts on this?

Maybe a good idea, but it's too expensive for me right now. I've gotta learn more before I spend any more $$$.

I just installed one on my Tenbrooks legacy. I previously had a scorpion bridge, and have tried many others on it. I really like it and will be keeping it on the banjo. It seems to have the most balanced tone of any bridge I've tried.

I have a compensator bridge rate now that did help the intonation but I am thinking , try the smile bridge. I am playing a Golden Era rate now.

I tend to be a cynic when it comes to an expensive equipment option. Particularly when it is endorsed by a person who stands to gain from the endorsment. No offense meant to Triska.

As a relative beginner I would suggest saving your money and focus on quality playing rather than expensive extras. Plenty of folks have done quite well with the basic bridge, tailpiece and rather plain tuners tuners of the Goodtime.

On the other hand if money is no problem then have at it and see for yourself whether the bridge performs magic.

Just took a look on the Deering site, out of interest. Not sure how they're going to patent the 'no sag' concept, as Tim Purcell does this as standard. As a concept though, I'd say it works: of all the bridges I've tried, I kept the Purcell one on my Sierra, as it was the only one that noticeably tamed the whole range of strings, rather than a select few

I think a lot of us players just love to tinker with are instrument. Like my Mustang Mach I 1971

The only major tinkering with my Goodtime has been to change from the standard Mylar (plastic) head to a skin head. The tonal difference is remarkable, the skin offering a mellower less aggressive tone to the banjo.

Skin heads require daily tinkering with head tension depending on moisture in the atmosphere. I rather enjoy adjusting the banjo for the best tone.

One of my students got one and put it on his Deering Deluxe. It's a good bridge, but we but a Kat Eye on it and it sounded better. Of course, it's not always that simple...head tension, tailpiece angle, strings, all contribute, and it's always finding the right adjustments of those variables. But my first impression is that it's a good bridge worth trying, but so far not my favorite. (Sullivan bridges, Kat Eye, and vintage Z are my favs.)

However I will say that getting a premium quality bridge is the best thing you can do for any banjo, whether it's a $150 import or a $10,000 Tenbrooks. If you've got a good banjo, spend another $60 and try a couple different bridges.
