Vega Old Tyme Wonder Update

From somarmd on 1/19/2016 2:58:48 PM

So I posted last week about my new purchase.  I'm enjoying the banjo very much.  However, I decided to change the head to a frosted top.  Decided it was a bit much, loud, overtones.  So I put a renaissance head on. Better ,but still not the sound I wanted from my Vega.  I put the fiberskyn back on and I'll be damn that sounded the best!  I did put a small piece of soft foam under the strings between the bridge and the tail piece too.

I'm wondering if any other owners ave experienced the same with their banjos, regardless of the which one you own?

I personally think one has a better chance of wining the lottery than getting two banjo players to agree on which ______ is best.

While I am thinking about getting rid of the top frosted head on my Goodtime Parlor banjo as it is sanding the skin off my fingers when I frail, as far as overtones are concerned, the way I figure it I paid for those overtones when I bought the banjo so I am going to keep them.

Now as crazy as that may sound, I have four banjos. Each and every one of them seems to be best suited to a type of song or perhaps the mood I am in while playing a song. Thus, if I pick the right banjo, what some may call "overtones" are an important part of the music to me.

Never claimed to be normal... I sometimes find myself trying to figure out how a player that is cooking with a song I like made those noises that others might think ought not to be there.

Yes I agree, sound is such a personal choice. I understand the four banjo's. I keep thinking one banjo, the right banjo will be all I want. I have four also but will most likely part with on of them soon. Then knowing me get another. I'm not even a very good player but yet fussy with the sound I want. Go figure!

I have a Senator, which came with a renaissance head. I like the sound, but do have a yellow duster between head and co-rod, under the bridge. It's not stuffed tightly, but just takes the edge of the overtones, which is what I prefer for singing. I also have a Little Wonder (not the Old Time model) and restored its frosted head after trying Fybreskyn. On this one, I have a small cube of packing foam under the bridge.
