Hi folks. Just thought we could kick this off by discussing what model we play and why. I'm learnin' still and have a Goodtime II. I bought because I like buying American when I can. That and their great reputation. So far I'm happy. A big step up from my asian import.

I play a Deluxe that I purchased back in 1985. That sweet mahogany just gets better with age.

Mine is a 10 year old Goodtime, by far my favorite of all my banjos.

My playing history was to start/stop a couple times in my life. Started in college mid 70's for 6 months on an ole cheapy brand started again in the early 90's with a washburn, it was an ok banjo but I only lasted about 9 months. Two and a half years ago I decided I'm not getting any younger and was determined to stick with learning so I did my research, went to local music stores and tested different banjo brands. I wanted a banjo that could be my final banjo while retaining some value over the years. I mainly tested Gibson, Crafters of Tenn, Deering. Narrowed it down to Gibson and Deering and between Earl Scuggs and Golden Era models (my price range) To me the decision was easy Deering quality and sound over the Gibson and the Golden Era was $500 less than the Scruggs model. Better banjo less cost no brainer for me.

I had a banjo in about '69 or '70, and never learned to play. Lacking a teacher, or any materials, never stuck with it. The banjo of that time vanished, so now at 57, retired, and having all the time to learn that I need, I'll start again, with a more positive, and motivated beginning.
I got my Goodtime 2 a couple weeks ago, and I'm really enjoying the experience so far. But I can't stop with this one, so I kept on shopping around, and found an '82 Deering Basic in pretty good condition for $500, so I bought it too.
Now the question is, did I get a good deal or not? It's said to be similar to the Boston, but that's all I know.
Any one else know anything about the Deering Basic?

I have a Goodtime open back with a Kat eyz spice and an add on Sosebee reso and love it. Plus I love the wider neck and the big old made in the USA stamp. Next upgrade is a Banjomate Armrest for it.

I have an 06 Sierra and an 08 Calico. Love them both, they have very different tones. Calico has a Tony Pass Rim and Fults Tailpiece.

I now have bobb62's Calico. I'm brand new to banjo but I spent hours and hours listening to videos of different banjos (in my price range). Deering kept calling to me, but really only the Calico and Terry Baucom models. My purchase exceeded all my expectations!

I have a Deluxe I bought used in great shape that is one sweet banjo.
But the one that I play the most is my Deering Vega Little Wonder. I love everything about it.

My 1980s Deering Crossfire was my first electric banjo, bought around 2016 to play with an electric band (including three sets of drums) at The Capitol Theatre in Macon, GA. That Crossfire holds its own but still has a banjo sound.
