Strings

From country72 on 12/15/2014 4:15:04 PM

I have a new Deering Sierra. I see post about people changing the strings out and not using the Deering strings. What strings do you prefer and why? I am a new player so I am learning. Help me out.

As a beginner, don't make it too complicated. Limit it to Light or Medium strings.

Derring strings are great. Don't worry about changing.

Well I can hear the difference in different banjos, strings, etc....I use light strings, but just wondered what other people prefer. Heard people speak well of GHS.

Not planning on changing them for a while. I just want to get a set for backup.

I use GHS mediums and they are great on any of my banjos from Deering to Mastertone.

I've had great luck with the Elixir Strings Banjo Strings with POLYWEB Coating. They are a few dollars more than other strings but they keep their tone longer than other strings I've tried.

I use D'Addario J60+, they are just slightly heavier than their lights, but, lighter than their mediums. I found them to be a lot easier to fret than the mediums.

I've always used Martin Vega Light strings, they are in a Pink colored box. No one particular reason except I always liked lights on my guitar and they sound good on my Sierra. They are easy on your fingers and seem to last quite a while and tune easily.

As a banjo instructor, I have been using D'Addario J57 Medium gauge. They are great and last a long time. I do not prefer the light gauge, as it seems to have a "tinny" sound, but are easy to play.

I wish there was an easy answer to your question, but it is like shooting at a moving target, as there are so many variables, including your own personal taste in what you think you want your banjo to sound like. First of all, you DO need to change your strings once in a while. I change mine about every 3 months, as they go dead, and, although you can get them in tune when tuning, they don't PLAY in tune. I can't explain it, but that's the way it seems to me. When you finally change your strings, you will probably find that your banjo "comes to life" again. I'm now using D'Addario J69, but think there is still something out there that I would like better. At $3- $5 a set, a person can afford to experiment a little. I also play trumpet, and it's the same way with mouthpieces, except trumpet mouthpieces run $30 - $100 each. I've spent a ton of money on them, and still haven't found the perfect one. I'm starting to think it's the player and not the mouthpiece that is the problem! Same rings true for the banjo......

I used to use GHS 160's on my Calico but switched to Thomastik-Infeld. I like a rounder richer tone on my banjo, not a biting metallic tone like some prefer, and TIs give me this. They are expensive, but they also last a long long time sounding better longer than any other string I have ever tried on guitar or banjo.
