I play and totally love the John Hartford model, but wanted a low budget banjo I could travel with and have an old time setup for variety of sound and playing styles. So I bought a Goodtime Classic with a scoop and am just loving it too.
First off it has the Deering neck so it feels a lot like my regular Jo. It can also sound pretty bluegrassy with bright highs using picks or super rootsy use bare fingers played away from bridge. And I can play some basic frailing tunes. Amazing versatility and it looks great with the traditional tuners and dark stain. My advice is get one! 12th Fret in Toronto gave a great price and setup right out of the box was stellar!
