just bought a Deering Maple Blossom can it be dated by the serial number which is 1286491-1887 ?

Suggest you email Carolina Bridges at Deering. She will tell you. They are nice people always willing to help. Nice banjo BTW, has that amazing high end Deering sound at a fair price. Have fun!

The serial number is on the label inside the pot. the number on the back of the head is not the serial number. I think it's the production number for the year...i.e. how many made that year. The serial number is much longer and there are 2 numbers on it that is the year made. go to their website, it will explain it better.

There's an example for sale in the classifieds:
a Terry Baucaum for sale and the serial number is:
012004008 0004.
So the year it was made is 2008 and it was the 4th one made that year. so, the last 2 numbers before the gap or dash is the year made.

Yep and the 1st two numbers of the serial # are the month of manufacture so in your example - Jan 2008

Thanks Very much for the helpful information I paid £900 sterling and it has a bear claw style tail piece lovely tenor banjo I can`t seem to find how much new in England they are but I feel I have got a bargain !!

well, it looks like it was made in July of 2011....Was there no space or gap in the number on the label? I assume this is your Golden era....not sure why some have letters in the last 4 numbers.

Is there much difference in sound quality between a maple blossom and Calico 19 fret tenor banjo if both setup the same ?

Shoot an email off to Carolina Bridges at Deering. I think you'll be surprised how fast you get an answer to your question. I think the Calico has a deeper resonator than the Maple Blosom so would likely have little different tone. I'm very pleased with the tone of my 5 string Maple Blossom and I'm sure you'll like the sound of your tenor.

my maple blossom sounds wonderful i1ve owned loads of different vintage tenor banjos oer the last few yrs and this model deering holds up to them I`m very impressed at Deering banjos there solid and great craftmanship well Done Deering !!

It looks like it was made in the 12th month of 1991. I think the 864 is the production number.

so now I`m wondering what the tone ring is made from is it bell bronze ?
it has holes drilled in it and it was made before the 06 tone ring does anyone no ?

The Maple Blossom and Calico are very similar with only slight differences. Go to the Deering website, and you can see each model, and their differences are found by comparing. Congratulations, Deering Banjos are amazing from my experience.
