Just found out about these groups and this one suits me to a tee. I've been playing a Deering Goodtime 2 for a few years now as I've been getting started. For the price, I don't think there's a better entry level banjo. I wish the special sould have come out sooner, I might not have ever needed an upgrade. My uncle has a Maple Blossom that only gets played when I show up - what a shame! He's hoping a grandkid will have a notion to learn though and so I can't ask him to pass that up... yet.

I'm now a big fan of the Tenbrooks line. I am really amazed at the tone and sustain - particularly up the neck. Absolutely beautiful! When I do get another banjo, I am looking for that kind of sound (or close), but don't have the wallet to match. I wonder what other Deering models in the $1.5k to $3k range I might want to check into? It will probably be at least a year before I get serious about a putchase. Suggestions and links to sound clips are very welcome.

If you like Deerings, you might want to try to play the Calico and the Golden Era. Both of these banjos are maple and have great tone. The Tenbrooks banjos are very nice, but can get really expensive. Also, beware that some of the Tenbrooks models have been made without the swiss tone ring. This makes a big difference in the price... So, if you find a deal that's too good to be true - it probably is.
