What kind of strings do you recommend? I still have the strings that were shipped with my Goodtime in December. I have played at least 60 hours since I got it. Is it time to change the strings? How often do you change them?

Hi Jerry, I use OME light strings on my Calico and I am happy with them. I usually change strings once per two months but I do not play it hard, less then 1 hour a day. A.

Hi Jez' This may cause a mild rumble amongst the ranks but My Saratoga came with Deerings, its had GHSs, Ernie Balls the next set will be D'Addarios; Why you may ask? Simple answer is that I got them at a good price! I really dont think that as a novice my string choice makes that much difference same as bridges, We all buy into "Use these strings" "NASA thumbpicks" etc. Remember its the Indian not the arrow. I just wish I would listen to my own advicse lol

Thanks for the comments, ya'all. I also play guitar and I swear by Elixir strings; they are coated which reduces squeeks and gives the strings a nice glide feel and they also stay in tune for forever.
Is there some equivalent to Elixirs in banjo strings? Like ... is there a string that most people would agree stays in tune longer or stays in tune better than others? Maybe I'm looking into it too much and I just need to try a few different sets.
cheers, Jerry

As a beginner I wouldn't worry much about the brand but I would go with light gauge for sure. They are just so much easier to fret and bend especially when you're just starting out.

See I hated the lights, I would try something med gauge. Ive tried several and despite all the hype there isn't all that much difference just read the packages since all med gauge sets don't have the same sizes. I tend to go for the thicker 1st string and buy whatever is on sale.

and as for changing the strings I don't think you need to rush. If they aren't broken and holding tune you're fine

I am a DiAdario Fan - Plai and simple - They made my Fender sound so good, that when I got the Baucom, they became the strings I use on it.
I use the J60+ .0095 .022 .013 .020W . 0095
I only chnage them when the sound gets cruddy - about 8 week
Cheers

I'm currently using Ernie Ball "Earthwoods" Frailing strings. At one point, i tried La Bella nylons, but after a few breaks, I tried these. They're alright, but I'm not in love. I just bought a set of nylguts- I've got to give that sound one more try.

ive got Aquilla Nylguts on my Reiter and I love them if they were not such a pain in the butt to keep in tune id put them on my goodtime as well but i like to switch tunings and they make it rough

The best buy out there are the Ghs brand. $2.79ish a set can't go wrong.
