Nashcamp Banjo Retreat

From Bob Murphy on 10/26/2011 2:50:31 PM

Just got back from Nashcamp banjo retreat in Nashville.  LOTS of awesome Deering banjos were there:

1.  Jens Kruger and his signature model

2.  Tony Trishka and his Saratoga

3.  Nedski and his Saratoga

4.  Two campers with Tenbrooks Legacy banjos

5.  Sierras, Deluxes, Goodtimes, etec.

It was a good opportunity to compare banjo makes and models, and Deerings all sounded great.

Hearing Jens play up close and personal was a real treat.  If you haven't gone to Nashcamp before, put it on your list of things to do.

Did the sound of any particular Deering stand out for you? I often wonder just how different my Calico would sound against the $10k models.

Great question. I didn't get the chance to play a Calico at camp, but since it uses the same hardware and has the same resonator dimensions as all of their top of the line banjos, I would assume that it would sound as beautiful as Jens Krugers personal model. As an example, my Tenbrooks Legacy has the Kruger ring. Another camper has the Legacy with the 2006 ring. We traded banjos, and we both agreed that they sounded the same! Jens Kruger and Ned Lubericki both have the 2006 ring in their Tenbrooks models. Assuming that you have this ring, I don't think one would be able to hear the difference.
