Put a myth to bed!

From AnsacsteveOLD on 4/12/2011 7:57:57 AM

Though you guys might like to view a correspodance I had with Deering:

Dear Stephen,
I don't believe we have told anyone to put linseed oil on it. They COME with linseed oil on them but I am technical support here and I just tell people to clean them with our anti-tarnish cloth...the grey/white one. Because the tone ring is not plated, it will discolor over time like the great church bells, but it will not change the sound/ability of the tone ring to give you great sound on your banjo. The tone ring is metal...linseed oil is put on it when they leave Reutsche in Switzerland to prevent tarnishing, not to prevent cracking.
Thanks for writing.

Sincerely,
Carolina Bridges

Hi Steve: I just got my new Goodtime Special. The exposed portion of the tone ring appears plated to me. I didn't pull off the resonator and try to see from the inside yet so no clue if it is or isn't. Does this letter only apply to specific models of the Deering line?

Yes, Carolina is referring to the Tenbrooks banjos with the Swiss tone ring that is not plated. The only other tone ring that we sell unplated is on the Golden Wreath - it has an '06 that is polished brass. All our other Deering and Goodtime tone rings are nickel plated unless specially ordered in nickel or gold. All the best, Janet Deering

Again, thanks and look forward to seeing you both in the UK later this year at Eagle Music Day.
