Custom Deering Eagle II

From Omahonyt on 12/17/2023 5:29:49 PM

I placed an order for a Deering over the weekend. This will be my first instrument ever. I absolutely love tenor banjo, and I cannot wait to play it.

However, the sales associate at Deering convinced me to buy an eagle 2 as a first instrument because everyone seems to upgrade after a year or two. She convinced me that the better the sound, and the better the quality, the more I would want to play. It also comes with a hefty price tag!

Do you guys think this is an accurate statement? Would I want to play it more?

Also can anyone here please recommend some beginner websites are videos or books for Irish tenor banjo. I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks, Tony

If you can afford it....get the better instrument. The better the instrument...the more inspiration. You are getting a fantastic instrument to learn on. I've upgraded twice in the last 5 months. You can skip that upgrade urge and concentrate on playing. Good luck!

I agree 100%. If you can do it go for better banjo, skip the upgrading hassle and enjoy your learning more!

Thank you guys for the reassurance and prove of mind. Cannot wait for the banjo to arrive!

Is there any tenor banjo websites, books, learning material, etc. for beginners?

I love my Eagle II tenor, and I agree with the other people that it is always best to start with the best instrument you can afford. Check out Enda Scahill for online tuition. irishbanjolessons.com/

You have gotten some very good advice. There is a lot of tempting junk available. No doubt that junk has discouraged many eager to learn.

I have a dozen tenors, all vintage top end Paramounts and a 1921 Clifford Essex Paragon, the gold standard for Irish tenors. When you show up at a session in Ireland, and pull out the Paragon, a seat magically appears for you. My most prized banjo is my Gold Plated Deering GDL. It is a masterpiece of craftsmanship and sounds incredible. Interestingly enough, some of the most popular modern banjos amongst serious Irish players, are Deerings. You are making the right choice.

As for books, with Youtube loaded with irish banjo vids, I think they are pretty much obsolete. I would buy anything from Enda Scahill or Gerry O'Connor if you need the feel of paper. Remember, you want to play by ear. Most sessions ban music and music stands.

You can email me at bob@IrishOldtime.com if you have any questions or tips. One immediate suggestion is make up your own string sets using 12, 17w, 26w and 35w Phosphor Bronze for the best sound. Most of the Irish banjo players (in Ireland) use Clareen strings with those gauges for a 19 fret tenor. Tom Cousin, owner of Clareen , makes some of the best banjos in Ireland. His gold plated Setanta is remarkable!
Good luck and remember to always have fun!
Bob
