Deering Sierra

From mby852 on 5/22/2019 8:26:47 PM

Howdy all,

Well I picked up that Goodtime gumby open back for $200 with case & stand . It sounds and plays great. But I appreciate a good deal and I found a Goodtime 2 Special in mint cond on Reverb for $425, only about 4 yrs old. Well I know that was a good deal so I snatched it up only to find the headstock cracked at the neck. It got damaged in transit and it's been returned and I'm still lookin for a good last banjo. Well I found a Maple Sierra that was just listed on Craigslist in like new condition for the asking price of $1200, about 10 yrs old. I found a thread in the forum in 2012 where someone was asking what a used Sierra would be worth and most were sayin that $1100 was a fair price and $1000 would be a good deal. So being 7 yrs later do you think $1200 is a good deal on the Sierra? Case, stand, extra strings and some books also.

Thanks for your time and thoughts!

I paid $1300.00 for a Sierra Mahogany which was 22 years old, but was barely played. I have seen similar used Sierra banjos that were much higher. It is a good quality banjo for the price.

Thanks BlueMoonBanjo, I've seen a few on Reverb and Guitar center that were selling for a little more that werent as in nice of a condirion that this one is. I'll take a look at it this weekend and if he'll accept a little less then I will probably go for it. It's a heavy one though isn't it?

I cannot believe how heavy this banjo is!! That means it is made with Top Notch quality materials!

The tone ring alone weighs a little over 3 lbs I read somewhere. That may be a deciding factor for getting it. I'm not going to be playing professionally but for that price for a quality instrument it's hard to pass up. I'm sure it'll hold it's value.

The Sierra is as close to the Gabriel and Golden Era Banjos which cost much more. I would grab it and not look back. It only means that it will keep its value if you choose to sell it later.

Well I got the Sierra. It is in absolutely new condition, not a mark to be found. It's an 09 model. I got a great deal, $1100 plus a music stand, digital tuner, new strings, new Deering cleaning cloths and a nice strap.
Aside from the weight I love it!

mby852 You will not be disappointed, I started with a Goodime two, then bought an Eagle II, but over the last few years I have tried a lot of Deerings and the Sierra and the Eagle II are both great banjos. I am a Tenor banjo player and deciding between the two took me a long time. Both are well made, the main difference are the tone rings and the Eagle II tone suited the music I play, but they are both great banjos and I am sure you will love your Sierra.

Thanks crazyace,
I wish in a way it was the Eagle ll that way I could take the back and flange off to shed a pound or two. The open back sits in my lap a little easier but I'm quite happy with the Sierra.
