Old style Goodtime Openback

From mby852 on 5/7/2019 8:37:39 AM

Hi Folks, I'd appreciate your thoughts on this banjo and it's worth.

It's a Goodtime Openback with the gumby peghead in excellent condition. The seller's wants $200. It comes with a leather Gibson strap, TKL hard case, stand, spare strings, picks . I'm a newbie in search of my first banjo. My other thought was a Goldtone CC100R but I would rather stick with the Deering line. That price with everything seems like a good deal to me but I'm here to ask the people in the know.

Thanks for your help.

Mike

I played a Goodtime until my fingernails got old and started falling apart. I can play 2F/IL or CH with an upside down pick, but the fingernails worked much better. I’m usin’ my goodtime as a Plectrum (no 5th string) now, and it’s slowly comin’ along.

Oh yeah, that one that you’re thinkin’ about sounds like a good deal, but it seems to be pretty inexpensive. How old is it? Have you seen it?
I have 5 Goldtones. I like ‘em.

I have a Gumby and a Sierra. I love the Gumby, it’s light and easy to carry around and has a great sound. My luthier had to adjust it for me, so if this is your first banjo, make sure you have it set up properly.

Does it play well? It’s older so take a look at the 2nd fret 3rd string for wear, like a groove. Even if it needs replacing the price sounds fair. Good luck!

Thanks for the comments guys! I've only saw photos of it and it looks fine. I hope the frets are good and the neck isn't warped or whatever happens being it doesn't have a truss rod. I'll probably go get it this evening. I'll let y'all tomorrow and show some pics.

Buy it. figure you got 75 for the extras and the banjo is 125. untouchable deal. It is my truck, boat, office banjo and I probably play it more than all my other banjos since I have it sort of muffled down to play in my office. I just picked it for a half an hour after lunch. Set up is fine, intonation is fine and soundds better than it should!!!

And so light it doesn't wear on you....

Thats what I figure too. That case sells for $110 plus all the others so can't go wrong I'd say either. And the weight as you mention is a big plus also. I'm borrowing one from a friend now and it weighs 9lb., more than twice of the Deering.

Well I got it last night and I'm pleased with it. It needs a nice cleaning and strings first. He played it a bit but there no nicks or scratches at all. I took a couple of photos to show but it doesn't Iook like I can post them on this thread. Let the fun begin!
