I've kinda moved on from Clawhammer from Scratch now, and thought I'd give a little dit about the benefits I feel.
As I work out new tunes (often using Dan's Old Time Festival Tunes as a reference), I find it easy and natural to be throwing in drop thumbs amongst other embelishments. These often give lovely little 'licks' which would be difficult to do otherwise.
I contrast this with a recent workshop I attended (taught by Dan). At that workshop not a single other attendee could perform drop thumb, and a number were eager to learn how. I think that shows the benefit of learning via the double thumb/drop thumb route.
