I'm very new to clawhammer banjo but wanted to skip the "quality ladder" I used to climb when I was younger. I'd start with a pretty awful instrument, then move up to a so-so instrument, and then , several years later, finally get something nice. Well, at my present age, that doesn't make a lot of sense, since every year on the ladder is a year less fully enjoying a quality instrument.
So, I drove over to Zepp's today, tried a bunch of nice banjos, and came home with the Honey Grove with the rolled brass tone ring. It's a simple instrument for a Chuck Lee but it really sounds fantastic even in my clumsy hands -- a very mellow, plunky, old-time voice.
Even this low-end model (for a Chuck Lee), although very simply adorned, is a great-sounding and great-playing banjo that I'm sure I'll enjoy for a long time.
