4th String

From RoBanJo on 9/28/2016 8:33:52 AM

Hi Folks, the 4th string on my 12" Ramsey Woody sounds thunky, uh punky, hmmm - not right. It has quite a different character from the other strings. It's strung with D'addario's. Ideas?

From BDCA's post, the Trying the Balch head sounds intriguing.

The only thing that's popping into my head is to make sure the string's sitting all the way in the bridge's slot, and to also maybe see if the bridge looks like it's either straight enough or at enough of an angle or distance from the center of the drum? I'm pretty dumb when it comes to the mechanics of instruments so again - just where my mind first went! If none of that works you could try another set if strings or see if someone at store will sell you just a single string! I mean 12" Ramsey's do sound a bit more thuddy than some so...?

Right about the punky rich sound but that string is so diff. Almost sounds flat even when tuned spot on. Thanks for the input Theresse.

Make sure your head is properly tightened. Just a 1/4 turn on each nut can make all the difference. I have the Balch head on my 12" woody and head tension is critical. Also make sure the neck relief is set properly. It WILL change with humidity . It is possible you have a damaged string (loose winding). I prefer phosphor bronze and just buy .22 or .24 guitar strings and break off the ball.
