Here's a couple pics of my new, 12" Custom Ramsey, with a Chubby Dragon on the face of the peg head and a Gryphon on the back. It has a rosewood tone ring and Electric inlays.

That is a real beauty! It reminds me a bit of my own 1998 11" Gryphon/Electric mahogany Ramsey...my very first banjo and still one of my most favorites to play. :)

It's my second 12" Ramsey. I may swap the Balch head and see how it sounds. The other is also killer.

I looked at your pics..you seem to have the Chubby Like mine. Mike does those freehand! He put a Gryphon, like my avatar, on the back of the peg head. So I get to look at it while I play!

My two Hog Sisters twin animal inlay banjos are 12". I had a 4th Ramsey 12" but I sold it several years ago. All my Ramseys have Renaissance heads now. What's a Balch head?

My 1998 11" has a griffin, not a chubby. On the front. Mahogany neck, rolled brass ring. It's got a pretty bell tone. Tucks under my arm nicely for playing. :)
During that time period, Mike's former wife Patty executed the engravings on my 3 Ramseys I believe.

(always have drooled over the chubby dragon...especially since I was a friend of Ray Alden, who had the "Chubby Dragon" named website)
Way back then 18 yrs ago, Mike told me he was lousy at engraving pearl and was taking a course...and his wife was much better at it back then...lol I am sure he's real good at it now!

His fire was early last year, maybe even fall 2014, I think...it has been awhile, and he's now set up a nicer studio than his old workshop, IMO. Bob, that's a beauty...are you still around NC? Would love to see it in person. Maybe now that Mike has finished yours, he'll finish my one-off flush fret that's been "in progress" since just after the fire! ;)

It was during the cold snap last year and his propane heater exploded. Mike wasn't home at the time but he lost a number of vintage instruments. He lives in the same building as the shop and he seems a very happy camper.
Mike was working on a number of banjos when I was there. I went straight from his workshop to RDU.
Where are you located?

Mike told me he was real close to 3000. BTW I put my Balch head on the new Ramsey and it's KILLER! It's both load and mellow, totally kicks ass! Now I need to order another...
It's like putting a great set of tires on your car..worth EVERY penny!
