Hi folks!
I was at an instrument store a couple of days ago with my son and we were playing several guitars and banjos just for fun. The shop sells some higher-end guitars e.g. Martin and Taylors but their banjos aren't hand-made or top of the line by any means - probably most if not all are made in China. They had Gold Tones and Gretch banjos...stuff like that. That said, MY OH MY did it make me appreciate my Ramsey Special! The first banjo I ever had was a gift - a Rover. I hadn't played anything better so I didn't hate it, but it was certainly very heavy, twangy, and "meh." Then I found a Deering Goodtime Special on craigslist which I bought and loved. It was after that that I got the Ramsey (actually it was Mike Ramsey's own personal banjo as a matter of fact - long story!) and came to understand just how good a banjo can be. Anyway, I was blown away by how AWFUL those banjos in the shop were to play compared to the Ramsey!! They didn't seem much better than that Rover. Maybe some of it has to do with being used to my banjo (that would make sense). But the others felt too tight and shallow and tinny and twangy...oh my god I love my Ramsey banjo!!! What a difference the larger head and scoop make. I love how ours can sound bright and powerful or more plunky and old and haunting, and I love the bounce of the strings, if that makes sense.
Ok, nough said. Just wanted to say "aren't we a lucky bunch?!' ;) Especially those of us who couldn't easily afford a brand new one or found them hard to get ahold of because of his wait times (or both)!
