technique

From myusername1222 on 2/19/2014 6:16:35 AM

So............. i started out playing bass guitar long ago, experimented with a bunch of different instruments and eventually fell in love with the banjo. i loved the way it was tuned and the 5 strings (4 fingers, 4 strings like the bass but with the extra 5th string). i used allot of my slap, pop bass technique on my 5 string, but always dreamed of modifying a guitar neck and a snare drum and making a banjo an octave lower so i could slap like a bass but use the chords and scales of a banjo. well... this last summer at cliff top old time Appalachian string band festival i discovered the cello banjo and it was everything i was looking for (albeit a little more expensive then i hoped). I got mine a few months ago and tried all of my different right hand techniques and strumming or clawhammer dont sound as good as pluckin rolls, but has any one else realized that you can slap/pop and totally funk out on it?

I'm still experimenting with it and having some difficulty getting a sound I like. I hope you will post video of your style. It might be fun to try and totally funk out.

wallflower, I'm experimenting with it too, in a group setting, and my home time. I've a bit of floded flannel between the top rod and the head (on the indise), way down by the bridge. The tighter if fits, the more it muffles the sound. I find the best thing for me to do is, when I play lead useing the 1st sting, is to put my little finger on the head, that takes a bit of the over tone out. As for chords, 2 finger ones work the best for me, useing a down stroke. It's really fun to see what it'll do, isn't it!
