I just thought I would do a test of the new BB group with a few updates from the shop.
I've been working on a new thin rim which I hope to offer as an option soon. I did a test one last week that was a little thin so I'm trying a new design this week that I think is going to work. It is a two ply rim which when turned will be about 3/8" thick (I had to bend 1/4" strips of walnut to make this work, which is the thickest I've ever bent). I think this thinner rim with a 1/4" rolled brass tone ring will have a significantly different sound from my standard 1/2" rims with 5/16" rolled brass tone rings. I'm guessing it will have a much plunkyer tone.
I'm also continuing my search for a place to cast brass L-shoes for me. The current machined ones I'm using are nice but they still don't have the more organic look and feel casting gives. I sent some samples to a new company yesterday and hope to get a price quote next week. I'm also hoping to get the price down since it seems like a lot of people like the brass hardware.
I hate to say it but I'm not setting up a booth at Clifftop this year. I decided to focus on custom orders rather than make spec banjos for the booth. I'm going to miss it but I'm really trying to get my wait time for a banjo down to a more reasonable length.
OK, back to work - I'm trying to get a couple banjos ready to deliver at Clifftop.
