Roots Response

From Possom on 3/9/2011 1:20:43 AM

Just thought I'd share a lil as well since aint much going on at work right now. I was bought up in a Christian home, church every sunday and wed nights, went to a christian school where my mama taught highschool. I was saved while attending there, baptised etc. My grandparents were all devout Christians. In the house of my mothers parents I got my early taste of Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver. In the others home my grandfather filled in as a preacher, A true man of God if ever was one, I've old tape of one of his sermons that still sends chills through me. The one regret I have is he never heard me play. Passed away when I was 12. I can recall hearing my grandmother singing while we rode to work the old standard hymns. As a youngin ,for me anyways, you think much about what you can do for the Lord. So for years I wandered along, sowed my wild oats like every teen and 20's year old does. Then I started playing music...@ 22 years old I found out that I had been blessed with a gift. Nobody besides an uncle played music in my family and he had all but quit playing guitar till he heard me play Amazing Grace. He called me the next day and we starting picking some. The next week we played it in Church. @ the time I had maybe a year under my belt. He started teaching me how chords went together and what not, I learned how to play backup playing with him. For 2 years I focused all my learning on backup and improvised lead breaks to Gospel tunes. During that time a local band (comprised of 3 of my great uncles) split up. Next thing I know he's recruiting me to come pick for him. Of course I do. His son also started a BG Gospel Trio of his wife him and another good friend and I fill in with them occasionally as well. These are people I hadn't seen in 20 years, and I can't help but believe the Lord put them there in my life again to help me along with my playing. Anyways long story short I always loveds BG, always loved Gospel done in the BG style. The harmony singing, the drive, the soulful expression of the music. Looking back now I can see the influences that laid the seed and groundwork for my new found passion and obssesion. The Easter Brothers performed annually at my home church, not to mention a rythm guitar and mandolin were a part of the church music every sunday. the Malpass Family/Brothers performed annually at the church I attended through my teens, all of these influences unknown to me then were pushing me toward the banjo. I figure if the He blessed me enough to put a skill in my mind and heart the way he has that I can only repay the favor by picking for Him.
