Speed and Dexterity exercises from the Deering site

From NickC on 2/1/2011 2:38:27 AM

Quite a few people seem to like these exercises posted on the Deering site. I've not tried them yet but thought it might be of interest. Just scroll down to lesson 2!

I just took a look at the speed and dexterity exercise. I'm going to start giving it a try tomorrow, see if I can keep it up as a regular exercise. I've never been one who is good at doing exercises when I practice. I start them but eventually find myself slipping into a song I know and eventually just playing songs. It's more fun. But I think I will make a real effort on this one and see if there is an improvement.

This was originally posted on the Tony Trischka school of banjo site. Several people have found it pretty useful too so i thought i'd post it up!

Okay. I totally suck at this exercise! After I started doing it, I remembered that I did try it very briefly last year and found it so frustrating that I decided it must be a bad exercise. Anyway, first day of it and I could not get away from continually hitting that first string with my middle finger out of force of habit. Also, I wanted to do it the differently so I decided to use T-I-M-T-I-M as the roll of choice instead of T-I-T-M. I quickly realized that the alternating thumb roll is better for the exercise so that both hands are using four beats.

Anyway, I'm keeping it up (even though I don't want to). I'll see what happens eventually and keep you all posted if I think it helps.

Sigh. Nothing is more dangerous than a someone with a little experience.

Hi, I just tried the link for Deering practice routines you mention at the top of this page, and it comes up as out of date, no go. Any ideas? I'd really like to try the exercises. Thanks!
