Would anyone have any thoughts as to what type, brand and or model banjo uke would be best for old time music?

	nohobanjo says: 7/16/2014 8:42:24 AM I have several banjo ukes now, mostly vintage ones from the early 1900s. I use them when I play with our local ukulele club. My favorites for old-time are my Gold Tone Deluxe that I fitted up with a Gold Tone tenor ukulele neck and tune the Aquila nylon strings gCEA--the standard ukulele tuning with the high G. I also play a vintage Washburn 17-fret tenor banjo tuned like a baritone uke--dGBE, but with a high D string. I use steel strings on this one. With this arrangement, I can play regular strumming patterns as well as clawhammer style. For clawhammer, I use the high 4th string as you would the 5th string on a regular banjo. This gives a great old-time "banjo" sound within the group. As to brands of banjo ukes, you get what you pay for. I like the Gold Tones for new ones and the Slingerland or Wendell Hall ones for vintage. Anyway, all are fun and sound surprisingly good for old-time. NohoBanjo of Northampton, MA

It's fine for my local jam which plays all sorts of music, but for what I think of as old time I prefer my Firefly from Magic Fluke. It has a less raucous and more plunky sound. A no name with a wooden pot and skin head that is being repaired and I haven't had a chance to play yet. A Banjo-ette with a metal pot that is having a new neck built. My most used is an S.S.Stewart tenor banjo with a short neck that I have tuned gCEA with a capo on the 2nd fret and Nylgut strings.
