What are you playing?

From Jim Yates on 11/21/2011 12:11:46 PM

I'd like to hear what other banjolele players are playing.

I have a Slingerland May-Bell with a resonator and an S.S.Stewart Tango banjo that I tune a full tone below uke tuning with nylon strings, but often play it with a capo on the 2nd fret.  I also have a banjolele with a Gumby style peghead that says Banjo-ette, Elkhart U.S.A.  This one has a twist in the neck and will probably need a new neck to be made playable, but it was $20 and I couldn't resist.

Chris, thanks for starting the group! Four members already in just a couple of hours and I'm certain that many more will jump on board when they see how much fun we're having.

I'm posting a couple of MP3s recorded by folks that play the banjo-ukes I build, hope you enjoy.

Jim, sorry for posting the above and having it show up as a respose to your question.

As you can guess, I play the banjo-ukes I build.

Is that a picture of you from a couple of years back?

Yep, that's from when I played guitar for the Beatles. Yuck yuck.

Jim, I didn't want to say anything but that picture sure looks like George when he was young. I'll bet if he was still around he would be migrating to the banjo-uke.

I'm playing a Gold Tone BUC concert scale banjo uke. I'd love to have an older american made banjo uke some day like a maybell but it's not in the budget right now. Plus I like a little larger size than the soprano.

I tried one of those Gold Tones at the Shelter Valley Folk Festival and really liked it.

Getting bad around here for me.
MayBell Model 24, open back
MayBell Model 24 flat back resonator
MayBell Model 20 open back
MayBell "Irish" tenor resonator (GCEA linear- nylon strings...so I guess she's a Baritone, sorta)
and a Morgan Monroe soprano 6" for when I don;t want to carry my wrenches- great group here CB65

All these other instruments sort of make my little 1928 Camp seem pale and pathetic in comparison. She's still my favorite uke and a lot of fun to play (and that's what's Really important!)

frets.com/fretspages/museum/Uk...puke.html

She resembles the one in the lower left, with a more oval shaped hole, 4 painted buttons on the fretboard, "Camp Uke" is stamped between the tuning pegs, and at one time she had a paper label inside; but that's long since fallen out and gotten lost... and since I've had her, I've worn off the varnish playing the poor thing.
