Painted head

From IMBanjoJim on 11/24/2021 4:41:22 PM

I am about to buy an old 19th century banjo with a painted head, and was wondering if this was a fad then, or later, in the early 20th century. I am assuming the head is original, but obviously there is no way to tell.

i also posted a thread in the Collector's Forum.

Many years ago I was given an old tenor that had a painted head - three black musicians, including a drummer and trumpet player. Unfortunately the banjo disappeared. I figure it may have been from the Twenties or Thirties.
