Hi all. I noticed this group being created a few days ago but no activity. Figured I'd pitch in.
I've been messing around with my banjo since this past December 2013, so a couple months.
I can pick around a little and am learning a couple chords. I am clueless about some basic things like posture, how to wear the strap, what's good and what not to do. I am considering getting some local lessons just to get the basic stuff like that cleared up. I'm not in any big hurry to be an expert but do pick it up and pick around almost every day.
Anyway, I look forward to whatever this beginner group brings. Happy picking!

just decided to try to play my banjo that I got for my birthday 6 years ago!! can play guitar but banjo is a whole new thing. got an epiphone 100--taught myself guitar so here goes--I love the sound of a banjo.

Hi there
I came back to the UK from a 7500 mile road trip across the States just before Christmas and brought back a new found love of Old Time tunes, so I've sold everything I didn't love or need and bought a Goodtime banjo and am learning Clawhammer. I've had it for 4 weeks now and can't put it down!
I'd love to hear how other beginners get on and progress, and what prompted them to learn the the most brilliant of instruments!

Hello John,
It's a lot of fun, but can be frustrating at times.
I have problems with the cord changes (D) in particular but Rome wasn't built in a day so I keep trying and I'm sure I will get there in the end.
I originally chose the banjo because I loved the sound, but over here in the U.K. it's very hard to get a good teacher as people mostly opt for the guitar.
I tried getting lessons but after a couple of months I realised that the guy teaching me was more of a classical guitarist and was doing me more harm than good so I stopped having lessons and kept on with the books, DVD's and the tube.
It's a brilliant hobby, good luck!

Hi, all. I've been trying to get a handle on the banjo since my husband gave me gift certificate for lessons in 2009. I tried to learn on my own with books and online instructions for 6 months, without much success. I guess he got tired of seeing the banjo sitting there not being played. My interest in the banjo comes from seeing pictures of my grandpa playing a banjo. I too try to practice the banjo daily, if only 15 minutes. It calms me, because it takes my mind off everything else. I have to give my full concentration to it.

Only just found this group and I think it's the one for me!
Like Joe I too came back to the UK from a trip to the states, where I was supposed to be working for 2 months but instead took up the banjo. I just fell in love with the sound and so I ended up bringing one back home with me!
I've been getting lessons for a couple of months, plus using the amazing resources to be found here and on the glorious internetz in general.
My teacher is a guitarist, but he does play the banjo too so I think I'm doing ok on that front. I'm focussing on Scruggsy stuff and melodic playing at the moment, but also experimenting with clawhammer because the old time stuff is so goood!

Hello All, Always in love with the Banjo sound and decided that I wanted to learn, been playing for six months and started with a local BH instructor and that went well, moving to another city - be closer to my children - so until I find another instructor in that area, I started the MM...and I like it, so with video, personal instruction, my next piece of the puzzle will be jamming. But I practice nearly daily...refining my CC and Banjo in the Hollow...

Me too....always thought Banjo was an intriguing instrument. Played guitar (self-taught folkie) in high school, took 2 years of classical guitar. Even though that was decades ago, it really helped when I started banjo. I wasn't a noob to stringed instruments (fretting, chords, picking strings). My teacher is Gregg Daigle, he's a member on this website. (The Gregg Daigle Band). I live in Albuquerque, Boston-born. I have a cousin in Boston who is a top notch clawhammer player and she is the inspiration that started this voyage. Right now I'm learning Scruggs, but I'd love to learn at least some basic clawhammer. I've been messing with some 19th century Brit melodic on my own (Joe Morley compositions)

I just clicked on the tab posted by Stephen Desantis, for "Waiting for the Federals". The tab that comes up looks like fiddle; 4 strings tuned E,A,D,G.
Is it linking to the wrong thing?
