to capo or not to capo

here is my problem.i have learned some basic songs in the key of G... but the group i play with wants to play in the key of A.. i dont understand the system of using a capo.. i was told that if i capo at 2nd fret then play chords as usual .and ill be playing in the key of A.. is that true.. and if so is it the same for any other key ,like C,E,F and so on..???? please help me to understand

	Heavy Duty says: 12/14/2011 3:56:07 PM Yes it is true, but you also have to capo up 2 frets on the 5 string as well. The reason you are in the key of A is because the banjo is tuned open to the key of G. By effectively moving the nut (white board closet to tuning pegs) up 2 frets, you are in the key of A. The first fret is G#, 2nd is A, 3rd is A#/Bflat, 4th is B, 5th is C, and so on using the scale and half steps. You will also find that many jams play in the key of C & D a lot as well. There is some really good resources available to help you learn the fret board, scale and capo use. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

	Spitfire-Smith says: 1/16/2012 4:59:53 PM Another good idea is to have spikes installed at the 7th and 9th frets to start off with. This way when you capo at the second fret for example, you simply hook the 5th string under the spike at the second fret and it's essentially retuned. It works pretty slick and it's also very cheap to have done.
