Method of learning

From thumper01 on 5/29/2011 4:33:30 PM

Since this is a beginner group I was curious. What avenues is everyone taking to learn? Private lessons, self teaching, Skype, etc.? As for me I just found an instructor and start June 6th with him. Prior to that was useing books and cd's Hawk

I am taking private lessons from Bill Chapman , (the Chapman Family Band) I just started. I have only had one lesson. I also use the internet to pick up tabs and just hear how the songs are suppposed to sound. I dont really have much knowledge of bluegrass music. I know that sounds weird but I love the sound but other than cripple creek and some stringbean and grandpa jones I couldnt name a tune, lol.

Go to you tube and search foggy mountain breakdown and then search Earl Scruggs. Lots of good tunes.

The first 3months i tried book form to learn and then took two months of weekly lessons with Armondo Zuppa i eclipsed what i learned by a multiple of 3 at least. I am now taking some time to reinforce what i have learned and build on my song base.

I have a private instructor but have also bought the Banjo Encyclopedia from the Banjo Teacher, Ross Nickerson(banjoteacher.com)great instruction I have been on rickmckeon.com and agree he makes songs very easy to play and sound good. He gives the beginer a lot of confidence. I am starting to pick up some back up and up finger playing from my teacher. I did like talking to Ros Nickerson. I would recomend to anyone to give him a call and have him steer you the correct way if you don't have a teacher. He sold me some great tools and asked where I was in my playing. His encyclopedia is a great tool and I use it as well as my teachers lessons. I hope this will help someone.

I have teacher his name is John Mark Batchelor, i have taken 5 lessons, and I have alot of books, I have been plunking on the 23 of this month 4 months, and I have to say I have come along way and still wonder if I will ever pick it up I am alittle old 55 in Aug, I figure Iwill give myself 7 years to learn, By then I can retire and play full time (ha ha), It is a very hard, but even with chords and just playing in open G it sound pretty good to me, my hands shake alot, D7 and C are getting there, Earls roll 321 123 1 is finely starting to take shape, but i try to pick it up at least 2 times a day a hour too 2 hours a day for 4 months and you would think I'D pretty good, yea right! I am a slow learner, I KEEP ON CAUSE i AM ADDICTED

i just want to say this must not be the beginner club, I guess I am going to start a beginner beginner club, cause I am far from learning any songs cept boil them cabbage down and I still after 4months and 13 days can't get it to be smooth, and i too didn't grow up around bluegrass either. only rock and roll, but I love the way this Jo sounds, i am so slow and i am on it 1 2 hours a day every day, but i was reading that some of the old timers they played 5 to 7 hours a day so I figure that, puts me learning in about 10 years, i quess give or take a few.

Well I am just trying to start off with self teaching, then maybe a lesson or two if I can find a decent instructor nearby.

dthomas, your doing fine. Your in the right club. I am rounding two years. the main thing I learned was relax and make your mistakes. I still play boil 5 to ten times a day. Later on you can play boil all sorts of ways. I up pick boil. move it up the neck. You'll be glad you learned boil. It gets pretty fun. I was where you are at 6 months. Then I decided to try to play a little faster and not worry so much about mistakes. I bought a couple of Ross Nickerson books and DVDs. He was the one who told me to play through your mistakes and you will improve faster. I did what he said and also worked on my timing and the metrodome. I still mess up a lot but I am way better than I was when I stressed over every note. Your doing fine. Practice Boil and practice the different rolls. I would also recommend Ross Nickerson's Banjo Encyclopedia at banjoteacher.com Janet Davis also has a book very simular. Have fun and the speed will come make sure to use good hand techneque. HAve fun
Mike

I am going down to a Murphy Henry begginers camp at the end of October. This will be my first real concentrated group format and I am getting quite excited, which for a 70 Yr. old is saying a lot. Dave
