As much as I play and record with my old StewMac aluminum pot wonder I thought I better join this group. Thought I'd share why I like this one to the point that I play it most.
I owned The Mutt for may yearstrying to use it for bluegrass and was always unhappy with the sound for that. Well, it isn't what it isn't, right? Then one day I tuned it down to E to learn a John Hartford tune and wow, the thing came alive. Couldn't believe it was the same banjo.
As I found myself doing more and more stuff in low keys, I thought maybe the Mutt would be worth a better bridge than the old Grover I had on it. I was in the process of building Mike Smith's new web site, and I discussed it with him. He made me a Kat Eyz McCormick Spice bridge that really REALLY woke this banjo up. No trace of shrill aluminum overtones . I then decided to try a different head. I had a 5-Star, which as I discovered was pretty thick. I thought about natural skin, but for budget reasons went with a Renaissance head. Sounded better yet. Finally, I added the Presto tailpiece from my Bishline when I put a Rowe Paintsville tailpiece on that. No way am I ashamed of this banjo. It has a unique sound... not for bluegrass, but I have another banjo that's good for that.
I guess the bottom line is that I thought for a long time that this banjo wasn't worth putting any good parts on. I'd recommend to any aluminum owner to try a good bridge if you still have the stock one. Probably will do more for you than anything, and you might be amazed at what's slumbering in the banjo you think you know so well.
