Mid 1880's - 1890's Henry Dobson High Grade Pony Banjo. Very unusual and well made high grade Dobson banjo, 9" rim (actual 8 7/8" OD), 21 7/8" scale, 24 brackets, H.C. Dobson spun tone ring with H.C. Dobson's Patent 1878 & 1881 hand scribed as noted on other early Dobsons). 18 fret Brazilian rosewood neck with ebony peghead overlay, heelcap and fretboard, rosewood friction pegs with pearl dots. Elaborate abalone and snail peghead and fingerboard inlays, Beautifully hand engraved Dobson scoop plate with cut and wriggle scroll and initials ALB. Scalloped dowel stick with center inlay. 4.9 lbs. Purchased from George Gruhn, who noted it was one of the most ornate small Dobson's he had seen.
Notes: Has a reproduction Dobson tailpiece (by Joe Horning), currently set up with high tension fluorocarbon strings to standard G tuning, 1/2" high five foot walnut/ironwood bridge, bone nut and pip,
Other: Neck has previous neck and heel area repairs, both very well done and minimally visible, completely stable and a non issue based on my father's opinion (he is a 45 yr banjo luthier). The neck likely refinished at the time of those repairs, based on the excellent condition of the neck finish. The dowel stick clamp is not original, and covers the serial number, which is partially obscured (2_634, second numeral is illegible). We were unable to remove the engraved scoop plate. The long Dobson peghead design combined with the extreme Dobson peghead angle and longer friction pegs will require a custom or especially deep case (which we believe was the cause for the original neck repairs). The banjo will be provided with and shipped in a deep basic chipboard banjo case, with the two front friction pegs removed for shipping and securely packed with foam, etc.
