This is a gorgeous RB4 replica, using all the most accurate vintage replica parts. This RB4 is on a whole different level from any Gibson reissue, Rich-era or otherwise, no disrespect to Mr. Rich!
At the heart of this banjo is a submerged wood rim by Jimmy Cox, and nickel plated 20 hole Dannick tone ring. The old walnut neck is an incredible masterpiece by Ronnie Bales shaped after McPeake's "Old Betsy". It has a very comfortable slight "V" at the first few frets. The Brazilian rosewood fingerboard is highly figured and you can smell the rosy smell when you open the case. The resonator is to prewar specs by Steve Gill. Notice that the walnut veneer on the resonator is stump wood like on the pre-wars, not burl like on the reissues. ALL the hardware is chrome plated, the tuner buttons are aged vintage ivoroid buttons. I air-abraded the underside of the flange so it has a matte finish.
Yes, with the submerged rim, Dannick ring and exceptional craftsmanship of the neck and set-up, this HAS killer prewar tone. I've even added a pre-EPA vintage Remo Weather King head to complete the package. All the ingredients are here, you just need to play it. Included with purchase is a typed detailed description of this banjo. Also included is TKL deluxe case. If you really want to go authentic, I'll include the friction 5th string peg that I had on there originally, but I changed to a geared peg for convenience.
This banjo has the looks, feel and tone of a 1930's RB4, but not the price!
