A while back, I contacted Mike Ramsey and asked him to build me a custom fretless banjo. I wanted something to kind of "match" but still compliment my Retier--a 12" Plain Jane Standard Fretless. It arrived today, and the thing is GORGEOUS!
It's Mike's standard model: 3-piece mahogany neck, 12" ebonized pot, ebony fingerboard and peghead vaneer. I asked him to make it completely without inlay, which makes it match my Reiter and also drove down the cost quite a bit.
Mike was great to work with. He had no problem with doing a banjo to these specs, and I think the fact that I had a very early Reiter helped (he and Bart are great friends). Mike is fun to talk with on the phone, and he really turned this banjo around for me in good time.
I simply cannot wait to get it out and play with it. I'll be posting all kinds of pictures soon.
HOOOOORAY! It's like being a kid at Christmas.
So now I am home and I've taken some photos. It's going to take some getting used to. One thing that became immediately clear is that this is not like playing fretless bass! I don't think it was conscious, but I think I had this idea that my comfort on the string bass would mean I could just pick up the fretless banjo and play it like the fretted banjo with perfect intonation. Um, not so.
This is a perfect instrument for me.

Congratulations on the new Ramsey! I wish I could hear it. I'll be back to check out the photos. It's nice to know that #46 has a new sibling. Don't be a stranger.
