Its another Christmas season. Time, in the paraphrased words of Terry Pratchett, "to be jolly...and other things ending in '-olly."
Lots of un-jolly things going on, though. Record numbers of people without jobs. Banks, businesses, even government entities are going bankrupt. They've fired something like 60% of the newly-hired teachers in my district, which means more work for subs like me, but for how long? Sooner or later they're bound to start in on the ranks of us subs.
Didja hear? we thought we were close to the end of the mortgage-run nightmare... turns out, there's a "second wave" of mortgage fiascos on the horizon. "Investment arm" or something like that. I feel like that Burl Ives snowman character from Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer, hiding behind his umbrella from the Abominable Bumble. ("Ohhhhh...! Tell me when it's over...!)
Buuuuut...
Maybe the bumble will bounce if we think about the good things we still have...
For at least the nonce, I still have a job. that's no small thing these days; heck, even flipping burgers or digging ditches would be better by far than no job at all, as long as they bring in some amount of money.
I have a job to work at that, even if I chance to sub for a coach who's outside a lot, usually has a place where I will at some time be under the shelter of a roof.
I have a place to live with a definite address, a mailbox, and a dialup connection that, while a bit dodgy, is still usable. A lot of the people I went to high school and college with are living under bridges right now...or worse.
I have my instruments, and for at least a bit, people with whom to play them. Who knows; maybe I can get in with a few and busk around a bit, pick up some extra cash...
Maybe the recent upturn in the popularity of my fluting and fifing will turn out to be an advantage (flutes and fifes are much easier to carry on a bus than a banjo, or *shudder* a 4/4 bass...).
But let's not wish ourselves into busking for a living. It gets kinda cold in the winter... and anyhow, I want to keep playing the banjo.
Let's see... oh, yeah. I have food.
I have a teensy bit in savings. Heh. Then again, maybe I'd better not dwell on the future of banking... yuck...
I have a (very small, but thankfully nimble) car that does mostly what I tell it to. Can't seem to make it fly or phase through walls, though. Still, it's better than Yukon Cornelius' dogsled. Mostly.
YAAAAHHHHHOOOOOO! *throws ice axe in the air like Yukon, watches as it falls into the lawn*
Hmmm... Maybe somethin'...?

Have to stick your pick axe into the side of a jewelry store to find gold these days.
We can't even agree on what the 'Bumble' looks like any more.
