weekends with Earl

Posted by robin jones on Saturday, December 6, 2008

Another good week of practice is under my belt. So far I've tabbed out

  • Heavy Traffic Ahead (breaks one and two)
  • Mighty Dark To Travel
  • Molly And Tenbrooks
  • Down The Road
  • FMB (one and two)
  • Roll In My Sweet Baby's Arms
  • Salty Dog
  • Come Back Darling
  • Pike County Breakdown
and am getting fairly proficient with TablEdit. I've decided that for the foreseeable future, even after I've moved on from Scruggs, I'll spend a good bit of my weekend practice time on Scruggs' tunes. I feel like this beginning again at the beginning is really helping my playing, especially in terms of playing clean and in time, and not just the Scruggs style stuff either.

I've also started practicing the guitar some. Fiddle tunes mostly so far, and playing rhythm when I practice singing. I hope to start writing some stuff but the spirit hasn't moved me in that direction. Yet.

Anyway, I'm getting ready to watch the SEC Championship in about an hour. Afterward I'll be back at work with Earl.

Roll Tide.

UPDATE: Seem congrats are in order. Go Gators!

Good for you. I like working with Earl's stuff, too. It gets down to the "meat and potatoes" of playing bluegrass banjo. I hope to develop some good practice routines like you are doing. Lately, with the family and holidays rolling in, it is hard to dedicate quality time to working on songs with the kind of diligence you have. Keep up the good work!

I am working on the Scruggs cabin tunes and really enjoying them, now if i could make them just sound like Earl did.

Fantastic! I'm so jealous you're getting so proficient  with tabledit! I'm not really jealous, you've worked hard to get yourself going on it. Impressed. That's what I am. Impressed.
